Jodi Parriott of Valley Christian has been selected as the top girls’ high school basketball player in Southern California by The Times. She was honored along with 19 other players selected to The Times’ 1995 Southeast/Long Beach all-star basketball teams at an awards brunch Sunday at the Sheraton in Norwalk.

The 6-foot-2 Parriott averaged 24.4 points and 10.1 rebounds to lead Valley Christian (24-4) to its fourth consecutive Southern Section Division IV-A title and a berth in the state final for the first time in eight seasons.

Parriott, who will attend USC, was also selected as the state senior player of the year by Student Sports magazine and as the Southern Section Division IV player of the year.

Tommy Prince and Russell Otis of Dominguez were chosen as the Southeast/Long Beach boys’ player and coach of the year. Stephanie Bassard of Long Beach Poly was selected as the girls’ coach of the year.

* Jonathan Nelson of Artesia had 14 points and Troy Collins of Pius X and D’Cean Bryant of Lynwood added 12 and 11 points each to lead the Blue team to a 118-103 victory over the White squad in the first Southern California All-Star game April 18 at the Pyramid.

Michael Batiste of Long Beach Wilson scored a game-high 25 points for the White squad.

* LaKeisha Backus of Long Beach Wilson has signed a letter of intent to run track at the University of Texas. Backus, the defending State 200-meter champion, placed second in the event in the World Junior Championships in Portugal last summer.

COLLEGES

The Cerritos College baseball team is closing in on the South Coast Conference title.

The Falcons (28-10, 16-3), ranked second in Southern California and fourth in the state, hold a three-game lead over Harbor (23-16, 14-6) with five games remaining. Long Beach (26-10) and East L.A. (23-15) are third and fourth at 13-7 and 12-7.

David McRill (.448) and Carlos Olea (.438) are among five Cerritos players batting over .300 in conference play. Fito Marquez is batting .390. Jose Miranda and Anthony Moreno are each batting .333 and Santos Cortez has a .314 average.

Jason Marr is 5-0 in conference with a 3.27 earned-run average in conference and John Ruiz is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA.

Cerritos plays host to Pasadena City at 2:30 this afternoon and El Camino at 1 p.m. Saturday.

* Wayne Allen was named as the most valuable player at the Cerritos College men’s basketball awards banquet. The South Coast player of the year and a all-state first-team selection, Allen averaged 15 points and eight rebounds.

* The Compton College women’s track and field team will attempt to win its fifth Southern California Athletic Conference title in six years Friday at L.A. Southwest College.

The top two finishers in each event qualify for the Southern California preliminaries May 6 at Cerritos College.

Compton’s Wintress Lang has qualified for the State meet May 19-20 at Bakersfield College in the heptathlon. She placed third with 3,738 points in the Southern California heptathlon finals at Santa Barbara City College earlier this month.

* Long Beach State catcher Kirk Pierce has been chosen as the Big West Conference player of the week. The sophomore helped the 49ers win two of three games against UC Santa Barbara. He had two three-hit games, including two home runs and a triple. He batted .571 for four games, with eight hits and five runs batted in, and scored seven runs.

Cal State Fullerton (39-6) leads the conference standings at 13-2. Long Beach (23-19) and Nevada (30-12) are tied for second at 10-5. Nevada Las Vegas (28-15) is fourth at 9-6. Long Beach plays at Pacific for a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

* The Long Beach City College softball team clinched its fourth consecutive South Coast Conference title with a 4-0 victory over Pasadena. Jennifer Jaime pitched a no-hitter for the Vikings.
