PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Pacifica Prevails in 13 Innings
Pacifica seized control of the Garden Grove League race by breaking open a scoreless pitching duel in the 13th inning and beating second-place Garden Grove, 4-0, Wednesday at Mark Twain School.
Pacifica (21-2, 8-0), ranked second in Orange County, now has a two-game lead over Garden Grove (15-7, 6-2).
The Mariners had four of their seven hits off Kathy Moore (10-5) in the last inning. Toni Mascarenas doubled to right-center field to score Valerie Downen and Autumn Gwinner, and took third base on the throw home. Although a squeeze play was botched, Mascarenas scored on catcher Lorrie Duran’s throwing error in the rundown to make it 3-0.
Tasha Sisco continued the rally with a single and took second on Garden Grove’s second error of the inning. Sisco scored on Amanda Freed’s double to left-center field.
The 13th-inning doubles by Mascarenas and Freed were the only extra-base hits of the game.
Garden Grove had two runners on base in the bottom of the inning, but Pacifica turned a double play to end the game.
Mascarenas (10-2) struck out 12, walked two and surrendered six hits. Moore walked one and struck out six.
In the Golden West League:
Rosary 4, Saddleback 0--Anna Villalpando had two hits, including a home run and two RBIs, for ninth-ranked Rosary (15-6, 8-2). Julie Luna had a career-high 10 strike outs and added a single and a triple. Lesley Fulton hit a two-run home run, her first of the season, for Rosary.
Saddleback is 5-8, 3-7.
In the Sea View League:
Irvine 1, Santa Margarita 0--Amy Young struck out five and allowed two hits for host Irvine (12-7, 4-1). Chrissy Greenwood scored the Vaqueros’ run on a throwing error in the fifth inning.
Woodbridge 8, Corona del Mar 0--Jackie Sukiasian (four innings) and Christy Robitaille (three innings) combined on a no-hitter and Lizzy Lemire went two for three with three RBIs to lead Woodbridge (15-8, 4-1). Corona del Mar is 2-13, 0-5.
In the South Coast League:
Capistrano Valley 3, Mater Dei 2--Unranked Capistrano Valley (9-11, 2-3) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after two innings and held on for the upset victory over third-ranked Mater Dei.
Chrisy Morgal’s one-out triple to right field drove in Jackie Anderson and Alicia Lopez, who both walked in the first inning. Lopez’s run-scoring single off Monarch starter Colleen Boddy (18-4) made it, 3-1, in the second. Lisa Tully went two for four with one RBI and one run scored for Mater Dei (18-4, 4-1).
San Clemente 4, Dana Hills 1--Stephanie Swenson pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts, Jessica Hellyer went two for three, including a two-run double, and Heather Hollis went two for three with one RBI for seventh-ranked San Clemente (17-4, 3-2).
Hollis leads Orange County with 34 RBIs.
