COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titan Rally Is Wasted in Loss to Wichita State
Mark Kotsay, a relief pitcher for top-ranked Cal State Fullerton, gave up his first earned run of the season in the ninth inning and seventh-ranked Wichita State won, 4-3, Wednesday night in Wichita, Kan.
Fullerton scored twice in the top of the ninth to tie it, 3-3, and Kotsay, who has pitched 18 1/3 innings in relief this season, started the ninth.
With one out, Wichita State’s Jerry Stein walked on a full-count, then stole second. Casey Blake singled to center to drive in Stein.
The Titans (39-8) scored two runs in the ninth on Robert Matos’ RBI single and a wild pitch. Jack Jones finished with two hits and a run scored. Designated hitter Jeremy Giambi also singled and scored a run.
Wichita State had 11 hits, including two each from Ben Thomas and Jason Adams.
Cal State Fullerton lost consecutive games for only the second time this season. Wichita State won, 8-7, Tuesday night. The Shockers (37-10) scored single runs in the first, third, sixth and ninth.
Fullerton starts a key Big West series Friday at Nevada.
