Golf Course to Raise Fence to Deflect Balls

Concerned that errant golf balls are posing a safety hazard along Agoura Road and at a Ventura Freeway off-ramp, Westlake Village Golf Course operators plan to install a special containing fence, city officials said Thursday.

Westlake Village Mayor Kenneth Rufener said the city has no objection to the privately run facility’s plans to install a 30-foot-high fence to run about 120 feet along Agoura Road. The same goes, he said, for a fence along the eastbound off-ramp at Lindero Canyon Road.

Rufener, an avid golfer who occasionally uses the course, visited the facility Thursday to review the plans. “This (visit) was the first step to giving them approval to go ahead and do that,” he said.

He said he believes the fences will be installed in the next few months. However, he said, “I don’t know whether it is 100% protection.”

Course manager Chris Vatcher said that while cars have been hit by balls, “you go to any golf course and that would happen.”

Rufener said he has occasionally hit balls in the direction of Agoura Road that were deflected by trees. “I’ve had one ricochet onto the ground and roll out onto the street,” he said.
