Golden West, Orange Coast Win State Swimming Championships

Orange County teams won the men’s and women’s divisions Saturday after three days of competition at the State swimming championships at Ohlone College in Fremont.

The Golden West men’s team scored 533 points to win its fourth championship in five years. Defending champion Orange Coast finished ninth with 156 points. Cuesta finished second with 413 points and Palomar was third with 365.

Saddleback scored 249 points to finish sixth, Cypress was 23rd (24 points) and Fullerton 28th (four points).

The Orange Coast women’s team won its seventh consecutive championship and 11th in the last 12 years, scoring 388 points. American River was second with 299 and Palomar third with 275.

Golden West’s Yan Gendlin won the 1,650 freestyle (16 minutes 10.50 seconds). Earning points for finishing second were Rafael Guijarro (200 butterfly in 1:53.77), Scott Deboer (200 breaststroke in 2:06.41) and Guijarro, Chris Merrill, Jason Klick and Carlo Franzia in the 400 freestyle relay (3:08.40).

Orange Coast’s women won the 200 medley relay (1:54.05). It also earned points from Tina Edwards, who was second in three-meter diving (394.95 points). Erin Snow was second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.26).

Other county women’s finishers were Rancho Santiago in 12th place with 99 points, Golden West in 13th (84 points), Saddleback in 19th (45 points) and Cypress in 24th (25 points).
