COMPTON : Schools Shut, Converted in Enrollment Decline

Share

Compton school officials decided Tuesday to close three schools and convert another to a learning center because of declining enrollment.

The schools that will be closed or converted are on the west side. Wilson Riles Elementary School, Mark Twain Elementary School and Cesar Chavez Alternative School are scheduled to be closed July 1. Officials plan to convert Vanguard Middle School into a district learning center in September.

McKinley Elementary, which enrolls students from kindergarten through fifth grade, will become a school for students in kindergarten through third grade in the next school year.

Teachers at the sites slated for closure will be transferred to other schools in the district, said Sanchez. However, cuts will be made in non-teaching positions such as custodians and secretaries.

District enrollment declined during the 1993-94 school year by 900 students and enrollment is expected to remain about the same for the next 15 years, said Associate Supt. Elisa Sanchez. The district currently has 27,500 students.
