Top Swimmers to Compete at International Meet

Some of the nation’s best swimmers will compete today through Sunday in the International Grand Challenge Swimming Invitational at Heritage Park Aquatics Complex.

Hosted by the Irvine Novaquatics, participants include Derya Buyukuncu, former Woodbridge High star and Olympian who now swims for Michigan, 1992 Canadian Olympian Gary Anderson, John Simmons of Southern Methodist Alison Fealey, who recently participated in the Pan Am Games, Olympic medalist Angie Wester-Kreig of Stanford, Kristine Quance of USC, Lisa Jacob, Suzu Chiba, Jessica Tong and Amanda Beard, who at 13 is one of United States’ top breaststrokers.

Top high school swimmers from Southern California will also be competing, including Southern Section Division I champion Bart Kizierowski, Mark Kwok, Philippe Demers, Blaine Morgan, Tim Martin, Wendy O’Brien, Cathy Carone, Carly Cox, Cheryl Murphy and Katie Lowes.

Preliminaries start at 9 a.m. today with finals scheduled for about 4 p.m.
