Titans, Anteaters Earn Big West Conference Honors

A number of Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine athletes have been named to the Big West Conference’s spring all-academic teams, it was announced.

Ten members of the UC Irvine track and field program were among 16 athletes from the school included on the team. Heather Killeen, the Big West women’s champion in the 3,000-, 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs, led nine Cal State Fullerton athletes--all from women’s teams--who earned all-academic honors.

Student-athletes who have a 3.2 grade-point average, have achieved sophomore standing and played in at least 50% of a team’s events were honored.

CS Fullerton--Shannon Dolan, softball; Kara Kolb, Deborah Denio, Jennifer Canfield, women’s tennis; Karen Harvey, Heather Killeen, Holly Ludwig, Teresa Santana, Jeri Young, women’s track and field.

UC Irvine--Darren Humphrey, Kevin Yamauchi, men’s golf; Chris Tontz, Marc-Andre Tardif, men’s tennis; Antje Fritschi, Mary Morr, women’s tennis; Lance Jacot, Adam Krolikowski, David Mayeda, David Siu, Eric Wu, Ryan Guass, men’s track and field; Skye Green, Carla Veltman, Laura Monson, Karin Schick, women’s track and field.

Bill Christiansen has been hired as the girls’ volleyball coach at Laguna Beach. Christiansen was a high school All-American at the school and went on to play on two NCAA championship teams at UCLA.

He has coached for 27 seasons, including the last four at Laguna Beach as an assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach.

Jeff Gall, a counselor at TeWinkle Intermediate School, will replace Ed Blanton as the athletic director at Estancia High.

Gall will remain on the TeWinkle campus early in the day and take care of athletic director duties at Estancia in the afternoon during the 1995-96 school year; he is expected to join the high school full-time the next year, Estancia vice principal Bill Wetzel said Friday.

Marina has hired Sam Wesley as its new girls’ volleyball coach, Athletic Director Larry Doyle said. Wesley has been an assistant in the girls’ and boys’ program the last two years.

Goran Grguric has been named varsity water polo coach at Tustin, athletic director Al Rosmino said. Grguric was the assistant at Tustin last year.

Katella’s Jamie Vaicaro has signed a letter of intent to run cross-country and track at UC Irvine, Katella Coach Mike Cochrane said.

Vaicaro was the Empire League runner of the year in cross-country and track. She finished fourth in the 1,600 at the Southern Section Division II meet.

Matt Sebastian, a 6-foot guard from Yosemite High near Fresno, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Concordia, the school announced.

Sebastian, most valuable offensive player in the Central Sequoia League, averaged 20.7 points and 11 rebounds this past season.

Southern California College pitcher Shannon Saylor and infielder Shannon O’Rourke were named to the NAIA Softball All-American second team, the NAIA announced.

Former Pacifica High star Jen Surface, a pitcher at Yale, was named an honorable mention all-star by the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Assn. Surface, a junior, finished 18-10 with an 0.94 earned-run average and 149 strikeouts.

Massachusetts’ Samantha Cardenas, a former Brea Olinda standout, was named to the All-New England softball team.

Cardenas, a sophomore, was the team’s third-leading hitter with a .364 average and led the team in doubles (18), triples (six) and runs scored (49). She was the Atlantic 10 tournament’s most outstanding player.

The Bullfrogs announced that Alan Stewart, Mario Delisle and Dairel Griebel have been released from the training camp roster and are now free agents.

Coach Grant Sonier said Griebel was released because he was up against two returning goaltenders. He said the other two players lacked experience.

The season opens June 3, when the Bullfrogs play the Los Angeles Blades at the Pond of Anaheim.
