SIMI VALLEY : Council Votes to End State of Emergency

Share

More than 18 months after the Northridge earthquake wrecked houses and buckled streets in Simi Valley, the City Council voted Monday night to declare the emergency officially ended.

The state of emergency began by order of the mayor at 7:40 a.m. on Jan. 17, 1994, a little more than three hours after the quake struck, and it was confirmed by the council Jan. 24.

Things are still not completely back to normal, but city officials said the remaining earthquake damage can be handled by normal, non-emergency levels of city services.

“While work repairing public infrastructure and private property continues, the state of local emergency no longer exists,” City Manager Mike Sedell said in a report to the council.
