Cincinnati Red pitcher Jose Rijo was examined in Birmingham, Ala., by Dr. James Andrews, who suggested the right-hander rest his elbow completely for several weeks to see if the pain goes way. Rijo, 30, has a calcium formation slightly smaller than a marble in a ligament in the elbow. The lump has been there since at least 1988, but he has continued to pitch with pain. . . . The Reds took infielder Brian Hunter off the 15-day disabled list and put catcher Damon Berryhill on it. Hunter, 27, had been on the disabled list since June 19 because of a tear in his right hamstring. Berryhill, 31, strained his right elbow.

The Boston Red Sox traded outfielder Mark Whiten to the Philadelphia Phillies for Dave Hollins in a deal involving two players having sub-par seasons. Hollins, who plays first base and third base, was batting .229 in 65 games. Whiten was a disappointment after a spring training trade brought him and pitcher Rheal Cormier from St. Louis. Whiten had two stints at Pawtucket of the International League, the first for rehabilitation and the second after he struggled with Boston. . . . The Red Sox also activated left-handed pitcher Vaughn Eshelman from the disabled list. He took Whiten’s place on the roster.

Contract negotiations between the New York Yankees and Darryl Strawberry have hit a snag because the team wants the slugger to donate part of his salary to charity and have a bank handle his finances.

The Yankees acknowledged the disagreement with a statement from team vice president David Sussman after Bill Goodstein, Strawberry’s agent, revealed the situation.

Steinbrenner wants Strawberry to contribute part of his salary to Daytop Village, a drug treatment facility.

Steinbrenner also wants Strawberry’s finances to be handled by an independent bank so he can avoid a repetition of past financial problems and repay back taxes and penalties to the IRS.

Roger Clemens, coming off one of the worst games of his career, plans to make his regular start Friday night after tests found no muscle tear in his swollen right elbow.

Boston Manager Kevin Kennedy said he plans to use Clemens in the series opener at Texas but acknowledged he may not know for sure until Clemens warms up before the game.

Clemens gave up eight runs and nine hits in 1 1/3 innings in an 8-3 loss Sunday to Minnesota.

The New York Yankees put Danny Tartabull on the disabled list and activated Melido Perez, then undid the move when Perez’s shoulder was too sore for him to pitch. Sterling Hitchcock made the emergency start for New York, and Tartabull, who had sat out 11 straight games, was technically available. Tartabull, who the Yankees are trying to trade, has missed the last 11 games with a rib-cage injury. . . . Catcher Todd Hundley was put on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Mets after an MRI examination of his left wrist showed a sprain but no fracture. Hundley was injured Saturday night at Colorado in a collision with Eric Young of the Rockies. To replace him on the roster, the Mets recalled outfielder Ricky Otero. . . . The Kansas City Royals bought the contract of right-handed reliever Gregg Olson from the triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Olson, who had no decisions and a 13.48 ERA in three games with the Indians, had accepted an outright assignment to Buffalo, where he began the season. . . . The San Francisco Giants acquired Montreal pitcher Luis Aquino in a trade for double-A pitcher Lou Pote. Aquino, 30, will be available for tonight’s game against the Florida Marlins. He has an 0-2 record with two saves and an ERA of 3.86. Aquino began his major league career with Toronto in 1986, and has also pitched for Kansas City and Florida. He has a career record of 31-31 with a 3.59 ERA and five saves. . . . The San Diego Padres put right-hander Scott Sanders (5-5) on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his pitching elbow. The Padres called up right-handed reliever Andres Berumen from triple-A Las Vegas to fill the roster spot.
