WASHINGTON : Mme. Chiang Pays Call

Share

In an appearance heavy with historical overtones and keyed to current developments, Mme. Chiang Kai-shek, widow of America’s World War II Chinese ally, will visit Congress Wednesday and meet with senators and representatives in the Senate Caucus Room. The 96-year-old woman, who lives in Long Island, N.Y., is expected to make brief remarks.

Her appearance coincides with an apparent rise in Washington’s relations with Taiwan, to which her late husband moved his Nationalist government after being defeated on the Chinese mainland by Mao Tse-tung and his Communist armies. U.S. relations with Beijing, meanwhile, have ebbed under pressure from human rights and economic disputes.
