San Gabriel Valley : BEAT THE HEAT
In the wake of a heat wave that killed hundreds of elderly Chicago residents, El Monte city officials are offering senior citizens free window stops that allow fresh air in while keeping burglars out.
El Monte Police Capt. Mark Gibboney said the measure is just one effort the city is making to address the security concerns of those who do not have air-conditioning, yet do not open their doors and windows despite soaring temperatures.
The city’s Jack Crippen Senior Center, 3120 Tyler Ave., is also offering social activities in air-conditioned comfort, Gibboney said.
El Monte seniors interested in window stops should call (818) 580-2070.
