After meeting with the Burroughs High principal and other school officials Thursday, the father of a football player who quit the team last week because of alleged verbal abuse said he and his son are willing to resolve the dispute.

In a closed-door session with Burroughs Principal Tim Buchanan, Richard Wilson complained that second-year Coach Robert dos Remedios made his son the whipping boy of the squad by directing at him vulgar and sometimes racial remarks.

But Ken Wilson, a two-way starter and defensive captain before he quit the team, wants to return if dos Remedios is willing to apologize and soften his approach in practice.

“Right now, Kenny will apologize and we expect Mr. dos Remedios to apologize,” Richard Wilson said. “If Kenny is not let back on the team . . . if it’s not ‘Please and thank you’ from now on, dos Remedios is a fool. He’ll be buying his meals from Burger King. How about a little esteem once in a while? The kids are only 17 years old.”

Buchanan did not return calls from The Times, but Richard Wilson said Buchanan plans to meet with his son and dos Remedios today in an effort to iron out their differences.

But dos Remedios said he has no reason to apologize and is not certain that Wilson would be welcomed back by the Burroughs team. Wilson’s teammates have turned their backs on him, dos Remedios said.

Before he quit, Wilson criticized players who had quit before him, according to dos Remedios.

“I know the kids on my team would say, ‘You gotta be kidding,’ ” dos Remedios said Thursday. “We’ve got a game to play [today], and I’m not going to deal with my team until Monday.”

In a related matter, dos Remedios has alleged that Burbank school board President Joe Hooven and Burbank High junior varsity coach Doc Johns approached Ken Wilson in the stands during last Thursday night’s game and talked to him about transferring to Burbank High to play football.

Dos Remedios has asked the Southern Section to investigate a possible recruiting violation.

Dos Remedios said Hooven also has asked Ken Wilson to make a report to the school board about dos Remedios’ alleged harassment.

“I deny that I make remarks to kids like that,” dos Remedios said. “I was a player, too, and I don’t think I’d like that.

“I’m a fiery guy and I’m very passionate about what I do. But I never curse [at] a kid.

“I might say something horrific, but I tell the kids, ‘It’s not directed to you.’ ”
