Restaurant Chain Sending Checks in Discrimination Case: Denny’s Inc. has begun mailing checks totaling $46 million to the thousands of people who filed discrimination claims against the restaurant chain. The unit of Flagstar Cos. agreed in May 1994 to set that amount aside to settle two class-action lawsuits that accused Denny’s of racial discrimination. “All of us at Denny’s regret any mistakes made in the past,” President and Chief Executive C. Ronald Petty said, adding, “The ‘new’ Denny’s does not tolerate racial discrimination.” The company began sending checks to the 294,537 claimants on Friday. As part of the settlement, the Spartanburg, S.C.-based company signed a fair-share agreement with the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People, pledging to boost its minority franchisees and managers.
