Los Alamitos Leads Pack With Six Players Signing Letters

Six Los Alamitos football players were among the county’s high school and community college athletes who signed letters of intent Wednesday to accept college scholarships.

Tony Hartley, The Times Orange County back of the year last season, signed with Oregon. His fellow wide receiver, Stan Guyness, signed with USC, and quarterback Kevin Feterik signed with Brigham Young.

Chris Wood, the Griffins’ center, will attend Weber State, and linebacker George Martin signed with Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Lineman Rashawn Davis has scholarship offers from California and Washington, and will decide after his scheduled trips to both schools, Los Alamitos football Coach John Barnes said.

“This is the most we’ve ever had in one season,” said Barnes of his recruited players. The Griffins had five players receive scholarships in 1986.

Hartley, who set county records in receiving yardage for a season and a career, called Wednesday’s signing, “the biggest step to this point in my life.” He said he had been nervous for a couple days, “but I’ve always felt this was the right choice.”

Guyness, who was considered the top wide receiver prospect in the nation in SuperPrep magazine’s preseason issue, said he will compete immediately for a starting position at USC. “They want to rotate me into the lineup,” he said.
