Council Addresses Concerns on Sport X

Overwhelmed by fierce residents’ opposition to the proposal, the Thousand Oaks City Council agreed Tuesday to consider two measures to ease fears about Sport X.

More than 120 people packed the council chambers Tuesday to protest Sport X, a plan to build a $35-million sport complex at Conejo Creek Park. Citing the concerns of Thousand Oaks residents over the development, two council members unveiled separate proposals to address the Sport X issue.

Councilman Mike Markey proposed the creation of an ad hoc committee to discuss the project. The committee would be made up of residents, two council members and two board members each from the Conejo Recreation and Park District and the Conejo Valley Unified School District.

Mayor Andy Fox, who said he has received more than 50 calls about Sport X, said he supported Markey’s proposal.

“I think it’s important that the citizens have an opportunity to work with the council on this particular issue,” he said.

Meanwhile, Councilwoman Elois Zeanah proposed that the council take a straw vote next week to determine whether Sport X has enough support to succeed. For Sport X to become a reality, the school and park districts, which own the land, would have to approve the proposal before it reached the city.
