Colleges / Campus scene : OCC Group Formed for Black Students

Share

Organizing cultural and social events and sharing information about campus life are among the goals of Orange Coast College’s Black Student Union as it seeks new members, said Taban Thompson, a 19-year-old Costa Mesa resident who is a leader of the group.

Thompson, who enrolled at OCC in the fall of 1995, said he was surprised to learn that there was no club to bring together the college’s African American students, who number more than 400.

“I felt there was a lack of unity among us,” he said. The club, which now has 25 members, also hopes to offer a political forum to promote understanding among students of all ethnicities.
