The city’s Fourth of July fireworks will be even more bright and colorful this year. The City Council voted this week to spend $27,300 on the annual pyrotechnics show at Dana Point Harbor.

The fireworks display, launched from a barge in the harbor, typically draws about 10,000 spectators and is one of the city’s largest events. Last year, the city spent about $26,600 for the fireworks and barge rental.

This year, Pyro Spectaculars, the company that contracts with the city to put on the show, will use more 12-inch shells, the largest fireworks allowed in the county.

“I can’t think of anything that enhances a small-town atmosphere more than the Fourth of July fireworks,” said Patti Short of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, which will make a contribution to help offset the cost of the show.

In other action Tuesday, the council voted to extend a temporary ordinance that allows businesses, for a $15 annual fee, to use portable “sandwich board” and A-frame signs to advertise their services.

The ordinance makes it easier for businesses that are off main streets to catch the attention of shoppers. The council also voted to review the ordinance on a yearly basis.
