It’s only May, but the Valley already feels like July. Starting this weekend, relief is in sight: Six Flags Hurricane Harbor reopens Saturday for its second summer season.

The water park in Valencia offers families several ways to cool off. It features a tropical fantasy environment with palm trees, lagoons, waterfalls, a 40-foot volcano, pirate ships and a water-spouting octopus. A river cruise, rafting rapids, three 300-foot-long speed water slides and three 400-foot-long twisting, open tube slides are also among the attractions.

The water park is next to Six Flags Magic Mountain and each park has separate admission. But a combo ticket is available. The good news is that the two halves of the combo ticket don’t have to be used the same day. So you could go to Magic Mountain one day and come back weeks later, any day this season, to Hurricane Harbor.

Americans love family acts. From the Barrymores and the Kennedys to the Marx Brothers and Hank Williams Sr. and Jr. This weekend, the Universal Amphitheatre is offering one more.

Eddie Levert of the soul music stalwarts the O’Jays, and his son, Gerald Levert, will be performing together in concert

The elder Levert is a founding member of the O’Jays, famous for their full-throttle vocals and precision dance steps. The R & B vocal group, which started its recording career as the Mascots in the late 1950s, had a string of eight gold albums during the 1970s. Among their hits are “Love Train,” “Used to Be My Girl,” and “Back Stabbers.”

Gerald Levert has recorded two solo albums and is the leader of the trio LeVert, with brother Sean and Marc Gilbert.

Last year, the father and son recorded an album titled, appropriately enough, “Father and Son.” A single, “I Got Your Back,” was a Top 10 hit on the R & B charts.

Gerald Levert told The Times last year that their relationship was the secret of the album’s success.

“We couldn’t just write songs about, ‘Baby, I love you and I want to kiss you all over,’ ” he said. “It wouldn’t have been effective for us as a father and son. We wanted to express some of our feelings for each other.”

ARTS FESTIVAL

Valley College will host its own Arts Festival this weekend for the first time in six years. The four-day festival, running from today through Sunday, will feature over 25 separate arts offerings, including music, drama, exhibits and demonstrations.

Scheduled events include the musical “West Side Story,” playing tonight through Saturday in the Little Theatre; the plays “Lend Me a Tenor,” “Let Me Show You” and “Margaret Sanger, Radiant Rebel, 1916”; a program of Broadway show excerpts; an art students’ ceramics sale; prose and poetry readings; concerts by the school’s Big Band, Chamber Singers, Jazz Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble; and exhibits of student artwork.

* Valley College Arts Festival runs today-Sunday at the school, 5800 Fulton Ave., Van Nuys. Tickets to “West Side Story” are $7 general, $5 students and seniors.
