Community College Assessment Fee

Share

I have received a letter from the Los Angeles Community College District proposing an “annual assessment” (tax) on property owners for landscaping, public lighting and recreational improvements for facilities “that may be used by the public for recreational purposes including informal, organized sports, city-sponsored programs, community events and other similar activities” (May 22).

I am adamantly opposed to an additional property tax to fund landscaping, public lighting and recreation improvements at community colleges.

There are no guarantees stated in the letter that the “assessment” will remain the same, so it is safe to assume that the “assessment” (another property tax) will continually escalate. There was no mention of any guarantee of what the money will be used for, so again it is safe to assume that “the district” will use it for any purpose it chooses without any input from property owners, including using it against property owners who might oppose a project.

I strongly suggest that the district charge user fees to fund these “improvements” and/or seek corporate sponsors.
