CENTRAL I
Miami took the long route but wound up where it wanted to be, winning the Central I Regional title game over UCLA, 8-4.
The top-seeded Hurricanes (47-13) had to win twice Sunday to earn their 15th trip to the College World Series, third in a row. Miami jumped on Ryan Lynch (2-2) in the first inning, scoring five runs with only one hit, a three-run homer by T.R. Marcinczyk.
Lynch walked three, hit a batter and got only one out.
The first-inning runs were enough for Clint Weibl (14-3)--who was pitching on one day’s rest--and three relievers. Weibl pitched six innings to win his second game of the regional.
Pat Burrell, voted the top player of the regional, hit a solo homer, his 21st, in the third inning to put Miami ahead, 6-0. Burrell hit four home runs and drove in eight runs in five games.
The Bruins (36-28) were trying to reach Omaha for the first time since 1969. This was their first regional appearance since 1993.
