Hartwell Ends U.S. Drought

Erin Hartwell won America’s first silver medal in cycling since the 1984 Games when he finished second in the 1-kilometer time trial behind Florian Rousseau of France, who had an Olympic-record time of 1 minute 2.712 seconds.

Hartwell (1:02.940), who won a bronze in the event at Barcelona, was looking at another bronze until former world-record holder Shane Kelly of Australia, the last of 20 riders, had a bad start.

Takanobu Jumonji (1:03.261) of Japan won the the bronze.

Meanwhile, the SuperBike was a super bust in its debut in international competition. Individual pursuit rider Kent Bostick, of Corrales, N.M., unveiled the Americans’ sleek new weapon for endurance cycling in qualifying and finished ninth, failing to advance.

Meanwhile, Italian cyclist Andrea Collinelli broke the world 4,000-meter pursuit record twice in three hours in reaching the final.

Collinelli first posted a time of 4:19.699 in the preliminaries to cut a second off British rider Graeme Obree’s three-year-old world record of 4:20.894. He then lowered it again with a time of 4:19.153 in the semifinals.

World-pursuit champion Obree, still recovering from a virus, failed to qualify.
