Swimmer Janet Evans finished in sixth place in her final Olympic race, the 800-meter freestyle. The race was won by her teammate, 16-year-old Brooke Bennett. The U.S. women’s 800-meter relay team won the gold as well. Meanwhile, Fernando Vargas of Oxnard, one of the top U.S. hopes in Olympic boxing, lost a controversial decision to Romania’s Marian Simion. And in the gymnastics all-around, the American women faltered as Ukraine’s Lilia Podkopayeva went on to win the gold.
