Anaheim Hills’ Stubbs Finds Tranquil Side of Life

Anaheim Hills Golf Course, which winds along some deep canyons, can be a very calming place in the hours just after sunrise. Just ask Scott Stubbs, who took over as the course’s head professional in January.

Stubbs likes to come in extra early some days and play a few holes. He says the course is at its best when he is sharing the fairway with a only a few rabbits or maybe a coyote.

“This might sound goofy,” Stubbs said, “but what I like best is being out on a course just after the grass has been cut and there is a cool breeze. It’s just so peaceful . . . It takes away all the stress.”

Such serenity is what brought Stubbs, who is married with two children, to golf in the first place.

He began playing when he was 8, but also was involved in several other sports, including baseball, soccer and football. But by the time he was 11, he started to tire of team sports, and his interest in golf continued to grow as he improved.

Stubbs went to Sonora High, which didn’t have a golf team, but he did play one year at Fullerton College. From there he went to Cal State Fullerton, which also didn’t field a golf team.

He started working at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights in 1983 and was there until he started at Anaheim Hills.

“Getting the head pro job was very important,” Stubbs said. “I was getting to the point where I was wondering if it would ever happen.”
