Notes on your surroundings Nature Party--Visit the Oak Canyon Nature Center for the 11th annual Children’s Discovery Faire today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will include exhibitors who run youth programs and activities in Orange, Riverside and Los Angeles counties. Topics include theater and music, science and natural history. There will also be a petting zoo.

Live performances of music and theater will be held throughout the day. And there will be plenty of opportunities for children to participate in arts and crafts.

The Oak Canyon Nature Center is a a58-acre natural park nestled in Anaheim Hills. It consists of three adjoining canyons, a year-round stream, six miles of hiking trails and the John J. Collier Interpretive Center.

The purpose of the center is to promote the preservation of native plants and animals through a variety of programs that allow participants to see, hear, and touch the natural environment in a positive family setting. The center also teaches about regional history and teach conservation of the county’s natural resources.

The center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Unlike other parks, picnicking, collecting, smoking, bicycles and pets are not allowed.

Entrance to the center and to today’s Discovery Faire is free. Participants are encouraged to bring a camera and comfortable shoes if they plan to hike.

To get there, take the Riverside Freeway (91) east to the Imperial Highway turnoff. Exit and head south to Nohl Ranch Road. Turn left and travel about three miles to Walnut Canyon Road, and turn left again. Pass the Anaheim Hills Golf Course; the nature center is at the end of the road, parking is on the left.
