Seventies Look Suits Ohio State

No. 7 Ohio State handed Pittsburgh its worst loss ever, pounding the Panthers, 72-0, Saturday in a nonconference game at Columbus, Ohio.

The Buckeyes scored on their first 10 possessions, outgained the Panthers, 602-120, in total yards and had a 29-4 advantage in first downs.

In 107 years of football, Pittsburgh (1-3) had never given up more points or been beaten by a bigger margin.

Ohio State (2-0), which plays Notre Dame at South Bend, Ind., next Saturday, has scored 142 points in its two games. That matches the most points ever by the Buckeyes in back-to-back games. They beat Rice, 70-7, two weeks ago.

Ohio State led, 65-0, with 3:12 left in the third quarter when Pittsburgh picked up its second first down of the game on a 28-yard run by Billy West. The Panthers only had one yard rushing to that point.

Running back Pepe Pearson, who like most of the Ohio State starters played little in the second half, rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns in 24 carries.

Freshman wide receiver David Boston had two touchdown receptions and scored on a 66-yard punt return.

No. 5 Penn State 41, Temple 0--Freshman fullback Aaron Harris ran for two touchdowns and the Nittany Lions scored on six of their first seven possessions in a nonconference game at East Rutherford, N.J.

The shutout was the second straight for Penn State (4-0), which it extended its unbeaten streak against Temple (1-3) to 29 games.

The Nittany Lions have allowed 14 points this season, their best defensive start since giving up four points in the first four games of the 1947 season.

No. 8 Michigan 20, Boston College 14--Scott Dreisbach led the Wolverines (3-0) to two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a nonconference game at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Dreisbach, who completed 19 of 28 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns, helped tie the game with a one-yard sneak 13 seconds into the fourth quarter and teamed up Jermane Tuman on a 58-yard pass play for the go-ahead score with 8:59 left.

Omari Walker had 114 yards in 19 carries for Boston College (1-2), which was coming off a 45-7 loss to Virginia Tech.

Minnesota 35, No. 23 Syracuse 33-- Quarterback Cory Sauter guided two Golden Gopher drives that led to a pair of Adam Bailey field goals in the final 5:23, including one with 42 seconds left that proved decisive in the nonconference game at Minneapolis.

With the help of two third-quarter touchdowns on fumble returns by Tyrone Carter, Minnesota (3-0) snapped a six-game winless streak against ranked opponents and will take a perfect record into its Oct. 5 Big Ten opener at Purdue for the first time since 1987.

It also was a crucial game for Minnesota Coach Jim Wacker, who had only 12 victories his first four seasons and must win at least five this season to keep his job.

Syracuse is 0-2.

Northwestern 28, Ohio U. 7--Steve Schnur threw three touchdown passes and Darnell Autry rushed for 115 yards as the Wildcats (2-1) overcame early offensive mistakes to win a nonconference game at Evanston, Ill.

Schnur had all three of his touchdown passes in the second quarter, tying school records for a quarter and a half. Autry had his 16th consecutive game of at least 100 yards rushing and scored a touchdown on an eight-yard run.

Ohio (2-2) had seven passing yards and four turnovers.

Illinois 38, Akron 7--Robert Holcombe ran for three touchdowns as Illinois won a nonconference game at Champaign, Ill.

Holcombe scored on runs of one, six and 31 yards in the second half as the Illini (1-3) turned a 7-7 halftime tie into a rout of the Zips (0-4). Illinois had not scored a touchdown in its previous three games.
