Atticus Springs Quite an Upset in Kentucky
Atticus, a 16-1 longshot, went right to the front and then withstood a claim of foul to win the $500,000 Kentucky Cup Classic on Saturday, upsetting even-money favorite Wekiva Springs at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.
The 4-year-old, ridden by Corey Nakatani, led at every call, finishing two lengths ahead of Judge T C, who also was the runner-up in last year’s race.
Atticus then withstood a claim of foul by the rider of Isitingood, which finished third.
Trained by Richard Mandella, Atticus covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:47 2/5 on a sloppy track.
Horse Racing Note
Langfuhr, ridden by Jorge Chavez, made a claim for the Eclipse award for sprinters with a 1 1/4-length victory over Honour And Glory in the $200,000 Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park. Lite The Fuse finished third.
The win was the third in a row and fourth in seven starts this year for the Canadian-bred 4-year-old colt by Danzig, who covered seven furlongs in 1:21 1/5 to win $120,000 for owner Gustav Schickedanz.
