Brea Olinda Is Too Much for Katella

Matt Calcevich threw three touchdown passes to Guillermo Esparza to lead Brea Olinda to a 31-20 nonleague victory over Katella Friday at Brea Olinda High School.

Esparza’s 19-yard touchdown catch with 2:43 left clinched the victory. He finished with seven receptions for 165 yards. Calcevich completed eight of 13 passes for 194 yards, as the Wildcats rolled up 459 yards in offense.

The Wildcats (1-3) took advantage of Katella mistakes and led, 14-0, at halftime. Gene Rose and Rick Amenta killed Knight drives with interceptions. The Wildcats followed both with long drives for touchdowns.

Esparza caught a 14-yard pass with seven seconds left in the first quarter to cap a 79-yard, 10-play drive. Eric Albrecht scored on a two-yard run with with 6:27 left in the half to finish off a 74-yard, nine-play drive.

Katella (2-2) stayed close behind the play of quarterback John Baldridge. He finished with 80 yards rushing and 79 passing. His 21-yard touchdown pass to Art Tiscareno cut the Brea Olinda lead to 14-7 early in the third quarter. Brea Olinda then drove 90 yards in three minutes, with Esparza catching a 35-yard touchdown pass from Calcevich.

Baldridge’s four-yard touchdown run pulled the Knights to within a touchdown with nine minutes left.

Brea Olinda’s Scott Lieng gained 107 yards rushing in 11 carries.
