Duck update--Defense is suddenly a big concern for the Ducks, who are giving up five goals a game after the first two stops of a five-game trip. The defense is in transition, only veteran Bobby Dollas and agitator David Karpa having been with the Ducks at the start of last season. Teemu Selanne is leading the way offensively with a goal and three assists. He and Kevin Todd, the former King, each had three points in a 6-6 tie against Montreal on Monday.

Blackhawk update--This is the home-opener for Chicago after convincing road victories over Washington and St. Louis. The Blackhawks are a changed team. They don’t have Jeremy Roenick, Bernie Nicholls or Joe Murphy anymore, and they don’t have Alexei Zhamnov either. They have been unable to sign him after acquiring his rights from Phoenix for the rights to Roenick, who also is unsigned. Left wing Eric Daze, who had 30 goals last season as a rookie, is out because of a sprained ankle. Chicago signed enforcer Basil McRae Sunday, and he’s likely to seek out Ken Baumgartner or Warren Rychel as he looks to make a good first impression.
