Atlanta pitching coach Leo Mazzone, a Notre Dame football fan, was sickened watching Notre Dame lose Saturday to Air Force.

“I don’t know whether I’ll bother going to [see] Pittsburgh or Rutgers [at Notre Dame] now,” he said. “I don’t want to play in no damned Independence Bowl. I hope Lou [Holtz] doesn’t go to any bowl instead of there.”

Mazzone talked about his baseball card collection and how he completed it with the help of a nun who taught in the Catholic elementary school he attended.

“I had all the Mickeys and Whiteys and Yogis,” Mazzone said. “but I didn’t have a [Gil] McDougald. Couldn’t get one. This one kid, Jay, had one, but he wouldn’t trade it.

” . . . So one day I told one of the nuns that this kid had baseball cards under his seat. She took them away and threw them in the trash.

“That afternoon, I volunteered to take out the trash. I got my McDougald.”
