Michigan Turns It Over to Penn State

Penn State’s defense, led by safety Kim Herring, forced five second-half turnovers and blocked a punt as the No. 11 Nittany Lions rallied for a 29-17 victory Saturday over No. 16 Michigan at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Penn State (9-2 overall, 5-2 in Big Ten) had four interceptions, two by Herring, recovered one fumble and returned a blocked punt for the go-ahead touchdown.

It was the second straight loss for Michigan (7-3, 4-3), which also had five turnovers a week earlier at Purdue.

Iowa 31, Wisconsin 0--Sedrick Shaw ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns at Iowa City as the Hawkeyes (7-3, 5-2) beat the Badgers (5-5, 2-5) for the 17th time in the last 18 games.

Shaw--the career rushing leader for Iowa--scored on runs of 29 and 33 yards in helping the Hawkeyes take a 24-0 first-half lead, and had an eight-yard touchdown in the third quarter that moved him into a tie with Ronnie Harmon (1982-85) as the school’s career touchdown with 32.

The Hawkeyes held Wisconsin 260-pound freshman tailback Ron Dayne to 62 yards in 17 carries. Dayne had 541 yards rushing in his previous two games.

Minnesota 23, Illinois 21--The Illini’s Robert Holcombe rushed for 315 yards, but quarterback Cory Sauter’s one-yard sneak with 46 seconds left at Minneapolis allowed the Golden Gophers (4-6, 1-6) to end their 13-game conference losing streak four days after Coach Jim Wacker resigned.

Holcombe, a junior who set his previous career high with 206 yards against Minnesota last year, broke the school record of 263 yards set by Howard Griffith against Northwestern on Nov. 24, 1990.

It was the fifth straight loss for Illinois (2-8, 1-6). Coach Lou Tepper was fired last Monday.
