300-Pound Man at Sea Floats His Way to Safety

NEW YORK — A 300-pound man found floating in 54-degree waters two miles off Long Island was saved by his girth, doctors said.
Robert Slutsky, 54, was rescued Monday morning dressed in a flannel shirt, T-shirt and boxer shorts. Officials told the Daily News that they have no idea how he got there. No boats were in sight, said fishermen who came to his rescue.
He was in critical condition Wednesday.
“He gave his name, but he remembers nothing of the event or how he got there,” said Dr. Michael Bloch. “Just as a whale or polar bear is shielded from the cold, this man’s fat actually saved him from drowning or freezing to death,” Bloch said.
