‘Sophie Tucker’ Tribute to Open

“The Sophie Tucker Songbook,” Sharon McNight’s one-woman tribute to the legendary singer, will makes its Los Angeles premiere with a three-week run, Jan. 7 to 23, at the Cinegrill in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, 7000 Hollywood Blvd. All shows will be at 8 p.m. except the final performance, a 3 p.m. matinee.

McNight launched her show last March at New York’s Rainbow and Stars, where it was hailed as “a musical theater tour de force masquerading as a cabaret act,” and has presented it to acclaim in San Francisco and Chicago as well as at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C. James Followell serves as the show’s musical director and doubles as Ted Shapiro, Tucker’s accompanist for 45 years. Tucker died at 82 in 1966. Reservations: (213) 466-7000.
