Matadors Earn Capital Returns in Sacramento

Cal State Northridge erupted for seven runs in the eighth inning and defeated Cal State Sacramento, 14-6, in a game at the Sacramento tournament on Saturday.

Designated hitter Ryan Hurd had three hits and three runs batted in, including a three-run home run in the sixth that gave Northridge (7-1-1) a 7-3 lead.

Shortstop Adam Kennedy continued his hitting tear, collecting three hits, including a double. Catcher Brian Wagner led off the eighth with a home run.

Northridge starter Erasmo Ramirez (2-1) pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on four hits. He struck out five and walker four.

In other baseball games:

Pepperdine 3, California 0--A home run by David Matranga in the first inning and one by Tyler Ferrer in the ninth paced the Waves (2-4) in a nonconference game at California (3-4).

Andy Shibilo (1-1) struck out five, walked two and allowed five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Randy Wolf was three for four for Pepperdine.

Cal Lutheran 9, Claremont-Mudd 4--The Kingsmen (1-1) had seven doubles, including three by Tom McGee, in a second-round game of the Claremont-Mudd tournament.

Erik Kiszczak (1-0) pitched five shutout innings.

Mike Young had a home run in the third inning and Brad Smith had three singles and three RBIs.

Earlier in the day, Menlo College scored six runs in the ninth to defeat the Kingsmen, 11-4.

Cal Lutheran’s Eric Buben had two hits, including a triple.

East L.A. 3, Pierce 2--Jimmy Landress had three hits and Tony Montiel had two hits for Pierce in a Western State Conference tournament game at Pierce.

The Brahmas (1-5) lost to Harbor, 9-3, later in the day.

East L.A. 10, Moorpark 9--Tim Nykoluk had three hits but the Raiders (4-5) lost a 9-0 lead in a WSC tournament game at Moorpark.

Dane Saiki had two hits and three RBIs and Ed Castellanos had two hits and two RBIs for the Raiders, who scored eight runs in the top of the fourth to take a 9-0 advantage.

East L.A. tied the score, 9-9, in the seventh inning and won it in the bottom of the ninth.

In an earlier game, Moorpark lost to Harbor, 9-4.

Canyons 9, L.A. City 6--Kasey Canale had three hits and three RBIs, and Kris Yeaman doubled twice and drove in three runs for the Cougars (7-1) in a WSC tournament game at Canyons.

In another tournament game, Canyons defeated Cerritos, 16-9.

Valley 6, Cerritos 6--Brad Farlow had three hits, including two doubles, for the Monarchs in a WSC tournament game called after nine innings because of darkness.

In an earlier game, Valley (1-6-1) lost to L.A. City, 11-5.

Oxnard 9, Porterville 7--Mike Corral struck out Porterville’s last batter with the bases loaded to get the save in a pool-play game at the Porterville tournament.

Mike Muller was three for three with two RBIs to lead Oxnard (5-3).

Ventura 12, Mt. San Antonio 5--The Pirates (4-2) allowed five runs in the fifth inning of the championship game at the Mt. San Antonio tournament.

Andy Super had three hits and Jeremy Pierce hit a home run for Ventura.

Earlier, the Pirates lost to Mt. San Antonio, 10-2.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC San Diego 95, The Master’s 88--Mike Penberthy hit seven three-point shots and scored 35 points, but the Mustangs (14-8) lost for the fourth time in six games.

Penberthy, a senior, has scored 2,363 career points, 15 short of Master’s record of 2,378 held by Carl Turner.

Glendale 83, Canyons 82--Carl Biel’s 10-foot jumper with 8.3 seconds remaining gave the Vaqueros (12-15, 4-2) the victory in a WSC Southern Division game at Glendale.

Biel scored 31 points and teammate Ryan Silva had 15. Curtis Wills led Canyons (12-16, 2-4) with 25 points.

Antelope Valley 96, Victor Valley 73--John Burrell had 27 points for the Marauders (24-4, 5-0) in a Foothill Conference Northern Division game at Antelope Valley.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 103, Santa Monica 36--Lisa Nielsen had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Monarchs (20-9, 7-1) in a WSC Southern Division game at Santa Monica.

The Master’s 83, Cal Baptist 61--Elizabeth Hansell and Laura Fralich each had 16 points for Master’s (16-10), and Kim DeVries had 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Montana State 70, CS Northridge 53--Tammie Mills scored 14 points and Tannea Nelson had 13 for Northridge (3-17, 1-9) in a Big Sky Conference game at Montana State.

SOFTBALL

CS Northridge 3-6, Stanford 2-2--Tara Glaister pitched a complete game in the opener and earned a save in the second game of the nonconference doubleheader at Northridge.

A two-run home run by Elizabeth Sanchez keyed a four-run third inning for the Matadors (4-0) in the second game. Chelo Lopez also homered in the game.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. UC Irvine, 15-6, 7-15, 15-4, 15-13--Kevin Barnett had 29 kills and George Roumain had 24 to lead the Waves (5-2, 4-1) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Irvine.
