4 Neighborhoods Get Grants to Clean Up Problem Areas
Seeking to spruce up gritty main streets by giving a financial boost to neighborhoods, Los Angeles officials this week announced that four small districts from South-Central to the San Fernando Valley will each receive $300,000 to clean up their troubled thoroughfares.
The awards are part of the so-called Los Angeles Neighborhoods Initiative, a locally devised and federally funded plan that puts the responsibility for cleaning up streets in the hands of residents.
The four neighborhoods--the Fairfax district, Pico-Union, the Vernon-Central corridor and Reseda--are the latest to receive the U.S. Department of Transportation funding. Eight neighborhoods got fiscal injections three years ago.
