Food Share Hike Raises About $12,000
Food Share’s sixth annual Hike Against Hunger last weekend brought in an estimated $12,000 in pledge money.
About 75 hikers, ages 8 to 81, participated.
“It was great fun, exercise and a friendship builder,” Food Share’s Anthoula Randopoulos said.
One-third of the hikers chose the 10-mile route from San Buenaventura State Beach to Hobson County Park, while 50 others continued on to Santa Barbara, the 30-mile route--stopping for a night in Carpinteria.
Jason VanBuskirk, 12, and his sister, Sara, 15, sprinted at the end of the 30 miles for a first-place finish.
Eight hikers from Metson Marine won the first-place business entry. Jessica Kirby is currently in first place with the highest amount of money collected in the single-hiker category. Participants have until March 21 to turn in money in the fund-raising competition.
All money collected goes to Food Share, which provides food to 188 agencies throughout the county.
