Olympic gymnast and actor Mitch Gaylord will speak to high school athletes from across Los Angeles County before today’s Greater San Fernando Valley Invitational High School Track Meet.

The 17th edition of the meet will be the first with an opening ceremony, according to Judi Rose of the Van Nuys Rotary, which is teaming with other Rotary clubs to sponsor the event at Birmingham High School.

An estimated 1,500 boys and girls will compete in all major track and field events.

In the 20-minute opening ceremony, Gaylord is expected to deliver an inspirational message, Rose said. The Grant High School graduate and former UCLA standout won a gold medal as part of the U.S. gymnastics team that finished on top at the 1984 L.A. Olympics.
