Pepperdine Gets Commitments from 2 Prep Basketball Players

Share

Pepperdine’s basketball team received commitments from Kevin Bradley, a point guard from Crenshaw High, and Jeremy Vague, a forward-center from San Marcos High in San Diego County, on Wednesday, the first day of the national signing period.

The 6-foot-1 Bradley helped Crenshaw to the state Division I title. The 6-10 Vague improved late in his career at San Marcos, attracting recruiters from several schools.

Neither player has yet to achieve the minimum score on the Scholastic Assessment Test, and Pepperdine does not accept non-qualifiers. The signings give the Waves 14 scholarship players, one over the NCAA limit, but Coach Lorenzo Romar said a player currently on the roster will not return.

Game over: Many of the region’s baseball teams will have to find a new spring break tournament next year. Rick Weber has had enough of the Birmingham tournament.

The Braves’ coach created the tournament three years ago after Thousand Oaks discontinued its tournament.

The Birmingham tournament has grown each year and 28 teams participated in it two weeks ago.

Weber made his decision after the Braves traveled to Las Vegas to play in the Bishop Gorman tournament for the first time during the break.

“It’s really getting to be a pain keeping track of the scores and trying to collect the money from the schools,” Weber said. “We really had a great time in Vegas, we’re going back there next year.”

College-bound: Van Nuys’ Carlos Mack has accepted a partial scholarship to play football at Fresno State, Van Nuys assistant Jim Friery said.

Mack, a 5-foot-9, 155-pound All-City running back who led the Wolves to the 3-A championship game at the Coliseum, rushed for 1,403 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Drew Bledsoe, a 6-2, 260-pound All-Golden League offensive lineman at Palmdale High, has committed to St. Mary’s.

Hirings: Westlake High has hired Peter Daland Jr. to coach water polo.

Daland, who coached water polo and swimming for the Warriors from 1988-1992, replaces Chris Jahng.

Richard Fong, an assistant football coach at Crespi High, has been hired as the school’s athletic director.

St. Genevieve High football Coach Bill Connor announced Wednesday that he is stepping down to accept the head coaching position at Garden Grove High.
