The death of a baby girl in Bassett hours after she was born Thursday was being investigated as suspicious by Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives, who spent much of the day interviewing the mother.

The baby was born just after midnight in a home in an unincorporated area near the the Pomona and San Gabriel River freeways, authorities said.

About 11 hours after the birth, the baby was discovered by her grandmother and rushed to a hospital.

“The baby was pronounced dead at 11:30 a.m.,” said Deputy Britta Tubbs.

Detectives went to the home shortly afterward to interview the child’s mother, Tubbs said. Authorities declined to release the woman’s name.

The mother was not being detained by authorities, a detective said. Investigators were awaiting the outcome of an autopsy before deciding whether to file any charges.

Meanwhile, sheriff’s detectives continued to search for a mother who abandoned another newborn baby girl Sunday by walking out of an El Monte hospital hours after the birth.

Detectives are searching for the woman who identified herself to officials at the Greater El Monte Community Hospital as Martha Trujillo, Tubbs said.

The mother left the hospital about five hours after the birth of the 4-pound, 13-ounce girl, authorities said.

The expectant mother called 911 just before daybreak Sunday. Paramedics found her at a public phone on Garvey Avenue in El Monte.
