Deputies have arrested two men in connection with the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old Stanton man Wednesday as he tried to walk away from a fight.

The shooting, which authorities said was gang-related, happened about 4 p.m. Wednesday in front of an apartment complex in the 8600 block of Cerritos Avenue. Manuel Juan Garcia was talking with four or five people when he suddenly broke away from the group and was shot in the front upper body, Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Wilkerson said.

Garcia died at the scene.

The assailants then fled in a blue car, which deputies said they located later that day in an alley several blocks away.

Detectives said that as they watched the car, they saw Jorge Hernandez, 24, of Anaheim, try to drive away in it and detained him. After questioning, Hernandez was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Further investigation led deputies to Filipe DeLeon, also 21, of Stanton. He was arrested on suspicion of murder Thursday morning while working at a Stanton grocery store, Wilkerson said.

Hernandez was held at the Orange County Jail in lieu of $250,000. DeLeon also was scheduled to be booked into the Orange County Jail.
