The facility: The fairways are generally wide, but errant drives can find trouble on most holes. Camarillo Springs, built at the base of a hill alongside the Ventura Freeway, offers every nightmare and potential distraction a golfer can imagine. There is the usual trouble with water (on 10 holes), hills, sand and rough. But a bad shot can also land on the freeway, a tract of mobile homes or a row of expensive homes lining the fairways.

The good: At $22 on weekdays, this is a bargain for the golfer who likes variety in 18 holes. The fairways and greens are generally in good shape. The course flows naturally over the varied terrain.

The bad: Not much, but at only 6,375 from the back tees, it’s not terribly challenging for low handicappers. There can be fog in the mornings, and a stiff wind often blows across the back nine in the afternoon.

The score: It’s a pleasant afternoon of good scenery and mild challenges for mid-range golfers. For the high handicappers, there’s plenty of trouble. Shirts with collars required.

Overall rating: Two balls. Worth an occasional round. * One ball: Like an X on the scorecard.
