Injuries Cloud Finish of UCLA Spring Football Practice

The players who walked into spring practice almost four weeks ago at UCLA walked out Thursday, with two exceptions.

Cornerback Javelin Guidry underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday and defensive end Pete Holland had surgery for a broken bone in his foot.

Both should be ready for the Bruins’ season opener Aug. 30 at Washington State.

Ryan Neufeld’s switch from linebacker to tight end was pronounced a success by Coach Bob Toledo, as was Ryan Roques’ transition from running back to cornerback, which has set up an unusual situation in that he will be trying to knock his brother, Aaron, from a starting position.

Neufeld was particularly impressive, according to Toledo.

“I think he’s found a position,” the coach said. “He can run, and he can block and he can catch the ball real well. I think tight end will be one of our strengths next season.”

A problem remains on defense, with a lack of front-line size.

Toledo may have to call on some of the big freshmen UCLA has recruited to play more quickly than planned.

The quest for a backup quarterback to starter Cade McNown has made freshman Drew Bennett’s work intensive.

“He’s gotten more reps than most backups would get in the spring,” Toledo said of Bennett, who still has walk-on status after sitting out last season.

“But he still has a lot to learn.”
