Federal Building Gets New Protection
Three-foot-tall, 18-inch-square concrete bollards are replacing temporary barriers that were erected around the Federal Building in Westwood in 1995 after the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building.
The concrete posts, set four feet apart, block off areas previously accessible to vehicles and are more attractive than the highway-median “K rail” that has protected the Westwood site for the past two years, said Mary Filippini, spokeswoman for the General Services Administration.
“When we initially put in the K rails it was for expediency, right after Oklahoma City,” Filippini said, “but it was our intention to change those out.”
Westwood-based Pinnacle Development is installing about 360 steel-reinforced bollards at a cost of $200,000, Filippini said. Pinnacle’s president, Jerry Venick, said the project will be completed within two weeks, and will include a bronze plaque on the Wilshire Boulevard side of the building in memory of those who died in the Oklahoma City explosion.
