Soka Gakkai International-USA has broken ground on a $2.5-million Buddhist center at 5899 Venice Blvd.

The 18,573-square-foot Los Angeles Friendship Center, which is slated to open by the end of 1998, will have several meeting rooms, a large auditorium, an atrium and an outdoor basketball court, said spokeswoman Nancy Sims.

It will be open to the public for lectures and cultural exhibits.

Founded in 1960, Soka Gakkai International-USA is a multiethnic American-Buddhist lay association that claims more than 20,000 members in Southern California and 300,000 worldwide.
