The Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers want the league to review a series of hits in a game, one of which put Star left wing Greg Adams out of action for six weeks because of torn knee ligaments.

The Stars want the league to review two hits by Oiler defenseman Bryan Marchment, one of which injured Adams.

Stars General Manager Bob Gainey also wants the league to review Marchment’s tripping penalty that led to Dallas’ winning power-play goal in overtime of its 2-1 victory at Edmonton on Saturday.

Marchment stuck out his right leg, tripping the Stars’ Shawn Chambers in a play similar to a Marchment move earlier this month that put Dallas center Mike Modano out for six weeks because of a knee injury.

That trip earned Marchment a three-game suspension.

“Even though the Adams play is the one where the player got injured, the one on Chambers is a good indicator of how [Marchment] uses his body to cause injuries,” Gainey told The Dallas Morning News.

The Oilers also are submitting videotapes for league review of a hit on Marchment on Saturday by Stars defenseman and captain Derian Hatcher. Hatcher drew a 10-minute misconduct penalty for the hit.

“It’s likely a lot more vicious than anything [Marchment] did to Modano,” Oiler Coach Ron Low said.

The Oilers also contend that the Stars’ Jamie Langenbrunner left the bench to join a fight near the end of regulation. Players leaving the bench in such situations are subject to 10-game suspensions.

“I was already on the ice and was coming to the bench at the end of my shift when [Oiler player Todd] Marchant and I got into it,” Langenbrunner said.

The Oilers’ elimination of the Stars during last season’s playoffs and the subsequent injuries have caused hard feelings between the teams.

Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Howard Baldwin can’t understand why Jaromir Jagr hasn’t signed a $53-million contract and suggested that Eric Lindros’ new contract has snagged the deal.

Jagr’s seven-year contract would be the richest in total value in league history, but Jagr’s agent, Mike Barnett, has not yet finalized an agreement the Penguins felt was completed more than a week ago.

Jagr now seems reluctant to sign because new, short-term deals for $8.5 million annually signed by Paul Kariya of the Mighty Ducks and Lindros, of Philadelphia, are worth about $1 million more a season.

Jagr has another season remaining on a contract worth about $4 million annually.

Boston left wing Ted Donato was suspended for three games and fined $1,000 by the league for a high-sticking infraction on New York Islander defenseman Rich Pilon on Saturday night.

“Mr. Donato retaliated against a cross-check from Mr. Pilon by slashing him in the shoulder and neck area,” NHL Vice President Brian Burke said. “The use of the stick in this manner by any player will not be tolerated.”

Kidd injured the finger midway through the second period in the 2-1 loss to the Capitals on Saturday. A shot went underneath a glove padding and caught Kidd on the finger.
