FRESHWATER

17. CASTAIC LAKE--A tough bite for all species. Guide Gary Harrison with Mogheon Shon, Seoul, Korea, caught and released four limits of largemouth bass two-five pounds on Reaper lures, and Margerat Bertone, Sylmar, caught a 15-pound channel catfish on a mudsucker.

18. LAKE PIRU--Trout fishing is fair to good, with trollers fishing Needlefish lures at 40 feet doing best. Some largemouth bass being caught at north end and in coves, with crawdads and night crawlers getting most. Crappie action fair.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Fishing is slow, with only an occasional striped bass or catfish being caught.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Trout best bet, with trollers using Needlefish at 40-50 feet doing best. Some bass being caught near surface in mornings and afternoons. Catfish bite fair at island, biting mainly on mackerel.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass slow to fair. Guide Harry Jioras, Ojai, with three clients from Japan, caught three 10-pounders, two nine-pounders and several smaller bass, on crawdads. Others not doing so hot. Trout bite steady for trollers at 30-40 feet. Leo Helfrich, Santa Barbara, five trout, largest three pounds, on chrome Needlefish. Catfish biting. Ed Guyette, Ventura, 10 catfish totaling 55 pounds, on mackerel at 10-15 feet.

22. CORONA LAKE--Strictly catfish. Largest, one 15 pounds 9 ounces by Kerry Taylor, Montclair, on mackerel in trees.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Just like Corona Lake, but with much bigger catfish coming in. Robert Fleeger, Anaheim, 59-2 catfish, on mackerel at Kid’s Lake. Another came in at 28 pounds and still another at 19-2.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Even better than Corona and Santa Ana River Lakes for catfish. Eric Norland, Garden Grove, had a dream day, catching a 66 1/2-pounder, a 40-pounder and a 25-pounder. Norland released all three fish. Bass and crappie fishermen doing fair.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish limits the rule for those fishing at night with mackerel. Lots of bass, bluegills and crappies as well.

26. LAKE SKINNER--No report.

27. LAKE PERRIS--The bass bite has slowed, with one 5 pounds 4 ounces the only catch of note. Lots of sub-legals biting on plastics. Some trout and bluegills.

28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--San Vicente producing plenty of bluegills. In the last week, 289 anglers landed 4,593 of them. Bass fishermen doing best at Sutherland, which yielded one 10-12. Catfish and crappie anglers doing best at Hodges.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout good only in days after plants, and there was one the other day. By Sunday, the activity will drop. Catfish and crappie bites fair.

30. BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout bite has slowed but many limits still recorded. Top trout, 7-1 by Bill White, Upland, on Power Bait near SS Relief (a floating head). Night crawlers best bet. Some bass (surface poppers) and crappies.

31. BISHOP--South Lake best bet, with rainbows averaging one-three pounds biting for shore and boat fishermen using bait and lures. Much bigger browns, raised in cages at the lake, were recently released. Bishop Creek good one day, poor the next. North Lake and Lake Sabrina fishing fair. Owens River slow to fair.

32. MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--Crowley Lake remains the hottest location for quality rainbows and browns, with fish to six pounds showing daily at the cleaning table. Convict Lake almost as good. Rock Creek Lake good for limits of smaller fish. Rock Creek producing an occasional Alpers rainbow. Twin Lakes fair in afternoons. Lake Mary fair in mornings and afternoons. San Joaquin River great--despite strong flows--for fly fishermen using mosquitoes and Sierra Bright Dots.

33. JUNE LAKE LOOP--June Lake good for limits of mostly pan-sized rainbows, though a five-pounder was caught on rainbow Power Bait. Gull Lake a little better. Silver Lake best bet for big fish: a six-pounder was caught on a Kastmaster, another 5-4 on a gold Rapala and a five-pounder on a gold Kastmaster. Grant Lake best bet for fly fishermen, with hare’s ears and olive matukas producing in afternoons. Rush Creek producing fair yield on worms.

34. BRIDGEPORT--East Walker River bet bet, thanks to an ideal water flow. Fly fishermen are having a great time with nymphs, emergers and dry flies, tangling with browns to about 24 inches. Lure fishermen using Rapalas not getting as much action, but catching much bigger fish. Virginia Lakes good for bank and float-tube fishermen. Upper Twin Lake produced a 10 1/2-pound rainbow, caught on a woolly bugger.

2. MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--30 anglers (1 boat): 1 ling cod, 80 red rock cod, 280 rock cod, 5 salmon. (Bob’s Sportfishing)--33 anglers (3 boats): 2 ling cod, 87 red rock cod, 308 assorted rock cod.

3. AVILA BEACH--69 anglers (2 boats): 1,035 assorted rock cod, 36 ling cod.

4. SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--51 anglers (4 boats): 214 calico bass, 1 sand bass, 2 white sea bass, 69 mackerel, 103 barracuda, 11 rockfish, 1 shark.

5. VENTURA--41 anglers (2 boats): 143 calico bass, 128 sand bass, 5 barracuda, 1 halibut, 3 rockfish, 1 sculpin, 2 bonito.

7. PORT HUENEME--31 anglers (2 boats): 197 calico bass, 1 white sea bass, 26 sand bass, 23 barracuda, 4 bonito.

8. MARINA DEL REY--139 anglers (5 boats): 123 yellowtail, 697 sand bass, 148 barracuda, 6 sculpin, 165 bonito, 3 thresher shark. (In-Seine)--85 anglers (3 boats): 41 yellowtail, 135 barracuda, 60 bonito, 190 sand bass, 6 halibut.

9. REDONDO BEACH--204 anglers (6 boats): 270 yellowtail, 275 bonito, 419 sand bass, 86 barracuda, 4 halibut, 9 sculpin, 1 skipjack. Barge--1 bonito, 1 calico bass, 8 sand bass, 197 mako shark.

10. SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--162 anglers (5 boats): 763 yellowtail, 133 sand bass, 5 bonito, 18 albacore, 5 blue fin tuna. (22nd St. Landing)--244 anglers (7 boats): 717 yellowtail, 11 calico bass, 379 barracuda, 156 sand bass, 28 bonito, 90 sculpin, 13 rockfish.

11. LONG BEACH--(Belmont Pier)--75 anglers (3 boats): 56 barracuda, 5 bonito, 20 calico bass, 64 sand bass, 8 sculpin, 216 yellowtail.

12. SEAL BEACH--159 anglers (4 boats): 624 yellowtail, 21 barracuda, 237 sand bass, 2 bonito, 13 sculpin, 2 rockfish, 100 mackerel.
