School District Sued Over Attack Taped by Student

The father of a 16-year-old Long Beach girl who says she was attacked during a nutrition break at her high school in December has filed a lawsuit against the Long Beach Unified School District and the parents of both the perpetrator and a boy who videotaped the incident.

The suit filed in Long Beach Superior Court accuses the school district of failing to notify the girl’s parents and provide adequate medical attention after the attack. The father, Michael Baxter, also alleges that the district should have known the violent nature of the attacker, a 10th-grade girl.

A spokesman for the school district Friday countered that the district had handled the incident appropriately by expelling the aggressor and suspending the photographer. He added that such fights are regrettably common.

“You’re talking about . . . a fight that lasted a minute or two,” spokesman Dick Van Der Laan said.
