Officials Unveil Police, Fire Services Antenna
A new 165-foot antenna designed to relay transmissions for Long Beach’s police, fire and other agencies switched into service Thursday as city officials called for further investment in the city’s communications system.
Standing 400 feet above Long Beach in the city of Signal Hill, the orange and white structure replaces a smaller antenna removed from the site after 32 years of service.
Included in the $2.2-million antenna project was the construction of a specially designed building that is expected to remain long after the new antenna reaches the end of its life expectancy in three decades.
Assistant City Manager Henry Taboada said Thursday that the antenna is only a precursor to a proposed upgrade of the city’s dilapidated emergency communications system, the financing of which has yet to be approved.
