A week before their veterans are possibly shipped off to parts unknown, the Philadelphia Phillies can still give fits to pennant contenders.

“Anybody who thinks a ballclub with their record will just go out there, lay on the grass and say, ‘Beat me,’ . . . it just doesn’t happen that way,” San Francisco’s Darryl Hamilton said after the Phillies defeated the Giants, 7-4, Thursday.

The victory was only the Phillies’ 30th in 99 games, but Manager Terry Francona sounded hopeful about the rest of the season.

“We’re not ready to give up the ship,” Francona said. “We lost one of our veterans when we traded [Darren] Daulton, but we’ve got plenty of other guys around here to pick up this club. You don’t see a lot of finger-pointing going on in this clubhouse when we lose.”

Mickey Morandini--one of the many Phillies mentioned in trade rumors--and Midre Cummings each had three hits and two runs batted in to lead Philadelphia.

“People are calling us every day about our players,” Francona said. “Anybody who knows anything about baseball should be calling us. I’d be calling about our guys too.”

Kevin Stocker homered as the Phillies, overcoming a freak hand injury to pitcher Tyler Green, ended a three-game losing streak against the NL West division leaders.

Green was injured in the third inning when third baseman Scott Rolen spiked his right hand while both players chased Stan Javier’s slow roller.

“From the looks of the X-rays, it doesn’t look like anything’s broken,” Green said.

Wayne Gomes (2-0) replaced Green and gave up one run in 2 1/3 innings. Ricky Bottalico got three outs for his 18th save.

Joe Roa (2-5) was tagged for five runs and nine hits in five innings, failing to hold two leads in his first start since June 14. He walked the pitcher, Gomes, with two out in the fourth to key that rally.

Rico Brogna’s RBI single and Mike Lieberthal’s sacrifice fly in the fifth gave the Phillies a 5-4 lead and finished Roa.

Morandini singled home a run in the sixth for a 6-4 lead.
