Capriati Is Out, so Seles Is In
Monica Seles has entered the Toshiba Tennis Classic, which begins Monday at the La Costa Resort in Carlsbad. Jennifer Capriati withdrew from the tournament Thursday.
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario had taken the last wild card, leaving tournament co-director Raquel Giscafre with a problem when Seles, ranked third, made it known Wednesday she wanted to enter.
That was the case until late Thursday, when Capriati’s agent notified Giscafre that the still-injured player was withdrawing. That opened a spot for Seles, who is playing at a tournament in Palo Alto this week. Seles last played at La Costa in 1991.
No. 1-ranked Martina Hingis is also in the Toshiba Classic, along with Mary Pierce and Venus Williams.
